Being one of the four girls in my high school AP Java class wasn't the best experience. My class was filled with 26 other boys who were always huddled together playing an online game or furiously typing away on their computers. Whenever I need help I would always go to the three girls in the class and never felt comfortable making an approach to discuss with the other boys. I always felt as if I didn't belong in the class. This made the class uninteresting and discouraged me from considering a career in the STEM field. Noticing the lack of STEM in school curriculums in the United States as well as a lack of diversity in the STEM field, I founded STEM Matters Foundation. STEM Matters Foundation hopes to expose students to the world of STEM through hands-on, informative experiences. Having already conducted a successful 5 week-long summer camp, STEM Matters Foundation would like to expand within our community and inspire others to find a passion in the STEM field.
